The Beach

She wore a white dress but decided, as she took one last look in the mirror, that she needed more. Something bright. She saw the vase on the nightstand and grabbed a single orchid. Her fingers trembled as she pinned the purple blossom to her loose braid. Shoes seemed just silly, so she kicked off her sandals and stepped outside. The sand was warm beneath her toes as she walked gingerly toward the shoreline so as not to step on a shell or jagged rock.

When she reached where he stood waiting she uttered simply and with conviction,

“I do.”

Oh...I love how the manufacturing of a brand new universe can be funneled into a single stream of words. I can feel the sand between my toes.

As constricting as a 100 word story is for the writer, it's completely freeing for the reader - you've given us just a little and we can go in any direction, discovering who she is.

I hate when I think a comment, and then come back later only to realize I didn't ACTUALLY comment. I live in my head apparently.

Anyway, I love what De said, and it's so true. Though in some ways, it is liberating for the writer too...at least I find it so.

Lovely piece, and so glad you posted even after the "deadline".
